The Suns need to find a Spark

The Suns continue to set records. Unfortunately, they’re the kinds of records you do not want to set. After their fifth straight loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder the Suns became the first team in the last 48 years to lose five straight games by at least 18 points.

With star guard Devin Booker doubtful for Wednesday’s home game against the Spurs and Isaiah Canaan listed as questionable with a sprained ankle it creates an opportunity for one of the younger Suns to step up and show first year head coach Igor Kokoskov they deserve more playing time.

Kokoskov’s options include rookies Elie Okobo and Mikal Bridges. Okobo had a strong showing his first time playing extended minutes on Sunday in Oklahoma City. The rookie point guard from France has impressed many within the Suns organization since training camp.

Ryan Anderson spoke highly of Okobo saying, “He’s a quick player. He’s a smart player. He can shoot the ball – but his play-making is going to be really important for this team this year.”

Okobo presents a better offensive option at the point guard position for the Suns, which is key in the ball-screen heavy Kokoskov offense. A more offensively gifted player compared to Canaan, Okobo can help create for others while getting his own.

Many fans have been calling for Kokoskov to give lottery pick Mikal Bridges more playing time or even insert him into the starting lineup. The Suns traded up in the draft this summer to grab Bridges, whom they project as an ideal 3 and D wing in the modern NBA. Bridges at this point will provide defensive help and knock down open shots, two areas the game the Suns desperately need help in.

It is still early in the season and it is understandable that a rookie head coach will ride his veteran players in Ryan Anderson and Trevor Ariza; however, the younger Suns should start to see minutes pickup and there is no better time than this five game home-stand coming up.
