Trae Young Claims First Rookie of the Month Honors

On Monday, Trae Young continued to add to his year of firsts as he was the recipient of the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors for October/November becoming the first player from the Atlanta Hawks to receive the award since Ivan Johnson in April of 2012.

Young led all Eastern Conference rookies in scoring (15.6 points per game) and assists (7.6 per game) over the six weeks, while also notching the most double-doubles, seven, of the entire rookie class.

In his first season, Young has turned heads with his passing acumen and has looked the part of a veteran floor general at just 19 years old. Despite being the focal point of many defensive game plans, Young has been able to use the extra attention to facilitate for his teammates and create opportunities for others.

Yet, Young has struggled shooting from the perimeter. Often dubbed as the “Next Steph Curry”, Young’s 24.8 three point shooting percentage over the first two months of the season have been anything but Curry-esque.

Despite the outside shooting woes, Young has still found a way to put points on the board–only Luka Doncic (the Western Conference Rookie of the Month recipient) averaged more points per game among rookies.

It’s fitting that Young and Doncic continue to be tied together as they were part of a draft night swap that also netted the Hawks a 2019 top-five protected pick. These two will remain intertwined in each other’s career narratives forever and so far, both have more than held their own on the game’s highest level.

Only six players in NBA history have ever won six Rookie of the Month awards (Tim Duncan, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Damian Lillard, and Karl-Anthony Towns). Young has been adding his name to list after list of who’s who throughout his rookie campaign, why not shoot for one more. Atlanta Hawks’ head coach, Lloyd Pierce, said  “I told Trae to win them all.”
