Trae Young: Player of the week

Atlanta Hawks rookie point guard Trae Young has been on a tear since the calendar turned to 2019 and the league at large is starting to take notice of what he’s been doing. Rookie of the Month awards–Young was honored in November, January, and February (and likely will take home March’s as well) are nice, but Young was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 25.3 points per game and 11.3 assists per game in Atlanta’s three games where the Hawks won two of the three. He had a +2.6 PIPM over the week with a team leading 0.4 Wins Added. Since the all-star break, his PIPM has been +2.2 with 1.7 Wins Added.

Young is not only adding more hardware to his trophy case, but he’s also getting some love from current players in his Rookie of the Year candidacy. Kyle Kuzma, Donovan Mitchell, and Blake Griffin voiced their support of Young following his game-winning floater against the Philadelphia 76ers.

In each of the Hawks’ three games, Young had at least 20 points and 10 assists. The team’s two victories came against playoff teams in Philadelphia and the Utah Jazz. Young’s combination of scoring and facilitating helps him to be the primary creator and playmaker for this team. In the win over the Sixers, Young posted 32 points and 11 assists while being guarded by the likes of Jimmy Butler, TJ McConnell, and Ben Simmons.

With the announcement on Monday, Young becomes the first player from Atlanta to earn the honors since Paul Milsap in April of 2016. In just one season, the rookie has put the work in to become the face of the franchise in Atlanta.

Young’s blistering close to the season seems to have tightened the Rookie of the Year race between Young and the Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic. After being traded for each other on draft night it seems only fitting that the two will continue to have their careers intertwined going forward.
