This is Town Business: Week 2- “What’s Beef”

So, what else do we need to know about what happened Monday Night between Kevin Durant and Draymond Green?

Media and fans chopped this feud up like a bowl of pico de gallo. There is nothing left to say about the main points- Green crossed the line. The suspension may also alienate Green. The possibility KD leaving has increased. Warriors fans don’t appreciate KD. All of it is there. However there are some underrated observations from this kerfuffle.

On this week’s Town Business, we will discuss these observations  and hopefully after this, we can get back to basketball.

The explosion was the  climax

The shocking aspect about this incident isn’t that it happened. It’s the fact that it was so public and personal. Green’s feelings didn’t just come out of nowhere. Granted, everyone knows that Green plays with his feelings on his sleeve. We also know that Green wouldn’t just randomly pop off like he did. So with that said, the possibility of long time animosity stewing among the team isn’t far fetched.

Regardless of the reason, I believe that the explosion was the peak of whatever internal strife the Warriors are having. Ironically, this whole incident may be a good thing. Why? Because clearing the air should take on any underlying issues and redirect the focus on the mission at hand.

Side B

In this whole saga, we only know about what Green said to Durant. Granted, I know it’s more salacious and it’s more of a story. But we are not talking about Durant’s role in this. Media and fans instantly consider Durant to be the victim, but he’s certainly not guiltless.

“Who the f**k you talking to?”

In the court of public opinion, we know that Durant only called for the ball. We don’t know what else he said. Judging from Green’s initial reaction, Durant had to either say more or say whatever he said in a condescending tone. Again, contrary to his reputation, Green wouldn’t snap unless provoked. Green’s suggested provocation could be a by-product of the following point.

Are the Warriors forgetting about Dray?

With the attention and acclaim that Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and to a lesser extent, Klay Thompson receives, it is very easy to overlook Green and his contributions to the Warriors. Yes, he’s not a scorer and know for offense. In fact, Green scoring is a luxury for a team. However it is his defense, rebounding and all around facilitating and playmaking that makes him vital.  Green will be a UFA in 2020, and he’s really aiming for that DPOY for more than just personal accolades. He’s gunning for that supermax-and who can blame him.

Green is just as valuable as the rest of the core. His value isn’t in points, but in his ability to guard multiple positions, his hustle for rebounds and blocks, and his elite ability to quarterback the entire defense. The Bucks scored 84 points in the paint during their blowout win at Oracle. The Nets scored 62 points in the paint. Even the Hawks outscored the Warriors in the paint. Had Green been in the lineup, the Warriors would’ve had a stronger interior presence. Maybe, Green is getting the sense that he is (or will be) the odd man out while the Warriors’ front office focuses on re-recruiting Durant. Therefore, he’s taken offense to it.

Town’s Finest

The Town’s finest for Week Two is none other than Stephen Curry. Granted, he’s sidelined with a groin strain. However, his assists off the court as it pertains to the feud is why he gets the nod. Curry made it his business to visit Green to get his side of the feud. He traveled with the team during the Texas road trip, and he fostered good vibes between the teammates with candid moments on the bench, trash talking  and joking.

When it comes to the game, Curry showed his value in his absence. The Warriors’ offense struggled during this road trip as well as in their victory against the Hawks. Without Curry, the floor shrinks, Thompson struggles, the pace slows and Kerr resorts to iso. The results? How about a three game skid?

Thats it for Week 2 of Town Business. Keep it locked on B-Ball Index next week where I hopefully will be talking about the game.
