Lakers Post Analysis

The Lakers have a problem handling extra help on their post ups. Read more about it in my introductory writeup here.

Note: click on any element of the visualization and the viz will update to filter specifically to that data. Ex: click on “Turnover” from the Outcome of Post Up section to see the entire viz update to only showing data for post ups ending in turnovers.

Key:

Help exposing the strong side includes digs and double teams from the strong-side wing/top of key defender.

  • “Correct” counters include cutting that open player to the rim or other attacks that exploit where LA has a numbers advantage on the strong side.
  • “Incorrect” counters include pin-in flare screens weak side, baseline flashes from the opposite dunker spot, cutting from the weak side, or other attacks that target the weak side of the defense, where the defense has a numbers advantage.

Help exposing the weak side includes sending an extra defender from the baseline or a strong-side wing/top of key defender dig/double plus bumping a weak side defender over to the strong side (either from the baseline or from the opposite slot) to cover for the player that is doubling/helping on the post up.
